Semi-autobiography of the author of the book (Akiyuki Nosaka), the film tells the story of a brother and his little sister during the second world war and the bombing of Kobe in Japan, where they are left to fend for themselves after the death of their parents. The details of the drawings are disturbing realism, and it looks like the real city of Kobe throughout the film. The story is poignant, heart-wrenching, one of those movies which no one can emerge unscathed.
